Lasers can be used as an effective source for heat treating applications. By rapidly heating the surface of a substrate and then allowing it to cool, the hardness of the area is changed. One advantage of using lasers in a heat treating process is that selective areas of a surface can be heat treated without having to heat the entire surface.
