LASER OPERATOR

Job Summary for Laser Operator:


Performs laser machine set-ups, maintains laser machines, and cuts/trims a diversity of alloys and components.  Reads production sheets and/or job travelers to determine specified operations. Performs routine semi-skilled assignments either as a project team member or independently following detailed work instructions or clearly defined work procedures.  Operations performed may be very routine and repetitive in nature and after once learned can be carried on without difficulty and only under general supervision. Team leaders facilitate the production of jobs and maintenance of the machines, as well as ensuring safe working conditions exist.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

  • Operates laser, utilizing safety enclosure precautions and eye safety protocols.
  • Positions metal components in fixture and places components on fixture-holding table, pushes button to close safety enclosure. Determines operation and adjustments needed for cutting.
  • Enters commands using control console to retrieve programmed instructions.
  • Performs work within acceptable quality and productivity standards.
  • Verifies measurements of cut material.
  • Counts finished product to determine completion of order.
  • Performs routine machine maintenance.
  • Operates routine vehicles and equipment required to complete task.
  • Performs other related, similar or logical duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Knowledge of laser machine operations.
  • Basic blueprint reading.
  • Basic knowledge of and use of hand tools.
  • Knowledge of equipment operation to perform routine maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of QC tools and gages.
  • Working knowledge of diverse materials and basic understanding of metallurgy.
  • Ability to move heavy objects (50 pounds or more).
  • Ability to use all machine shop tools, including computer console/computer controlled machines.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others.
  • Excellent knowledge of safety regulations and the ability to enforce safety, including eye safety.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma (preferred) or GED.

Language Skills:

  • Organizational and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Ability to read and interpret commonly used machine shop concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Ability to follow instructions and pre-established guidelines.

Mathematical Skills:

  • Solid math foundation. 
Reasoning Ability:
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
