CAD DRAFTER

Job Summary for CAD Drafter:

Transforms initial rough product designs using computer aided design (CAD) into working documents.  Reviews engineering drawings and designs to ensure adherence to established specifications and standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Other duties maybe assigned:

  • Designs and prepares detailed electronic (CAD) working plans, charts and/or scale drawings for complex projects from observations, measurements, sketches and specifications.
  • Interfaces with departmental personnel to obtain details of equipment and material required.
  • Prepares electronic layouts, charts, detailed scale drawings and material and equipment requirements from sketches, specifications and standard layouts provided by customers, consultants, and/or departmental contacts; reviews and manipulates electronic files received from consultants and department contacts.
  • Makes basic computation to determine layout of charts, strength of materials and requirements for structural design.
  • Revises computer-aided designs and plans to comply with modified specifications made during actual construction.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to use 2D and 3D parametric modeling software.
  • Drafting ability, including knowledge of drafting practices and standards.
  • Blue print reading, including orthographic and isometric view.
  • Basic mechanical engineering knowledge.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing techniques, including surfacing, welding, milling and bending techniques.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Associate degree in Design, Architecture or a related field with course work in computer-aided design or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or 1 to 2 years experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Advance levels may require a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Technology or Pre-Engineering, along with 2 to 5 years experience and/or training.

Language Skills:

  • Ability to read and interpret commonly used concepts, practices and procedures.
  • Ability to follow instructions and pre-established guidelines.
  • Ability to look for interferences an understand function of parts.
  • Ability to work independently or with little supervision.
  • Ability to intuitively find and correct minor design flaws.

Mathematical Skills:

  • 2D Drafting ability.
  • 3D Drafting ability.
  • Advanced geometry – needed to calculate circular flats and odd shapes.
  • Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.

Reasoning Ability:

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations.
