Sidney Lamar Smith, JR.
January 13, 1943 – April 8, 2014
Sidney Lamar Smith, Jr., 71, died Tuesday, April 8, 2014, in Oxford,
Mississippi. A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, April 12,
2015 at Taylor United Methodist Church in Taylor, MS.
A Gulfport native, Smith was the son of Sidney Lamar Smith and Kathleen Land
Smith. His younger sister, Kathy Smith McCall, preceded him in death.
A 1961 Mr. Gulfport High School, Student Body President and three sport
varsity athlete, Smith enjoyed GHS sports and was an avid Ole Miss Rebel
fan. He was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church, Gulfport.
A math major at the University of Mississippi, Smith started his career at
Boeing as a computer specialist before it was a popular profession. He went
on to work for Litton Industries, later Northrop Grumman for 34 years.
While at Ole Miss he Jane Lyle Ray “Jeepsie” and the couple was married for
50 years.
He loved cooking shows, casting a mullet net, and fishing out front in the
Gulf. In later years he enjoyed reading and became an accidental hipster
listening to his old vinyl records on the front porch. He loved spending
time with his grandchildren who affectionately called him “Bop.”
He is survived by his wife, Jeepsie; a daughter, Lyle Smith Morgan and her
husband, Matt of Little Rock, AR; two sons, Sidney Smith III and his wife,
Jenni of Ellicott City, MD; Austin Fentress Ray Smith of New York, NY; and
two grandchildren, Fentress Welch Morgan and Andrew Austin Ovenstone Smith.
