I went to Ole Miss in the fall of 1961, but in the summer of '62 my father
was reassigned to Bitburg Air Base in Germany. I dropped out of school
during the fall semester of '62 and went with the family to Germany. The
University of Maryland had a branch with about 500 students in Munich,
Germany, which I attended from Jan '63 to Jan '64, and then I came back to
their main campus in College Park, Maryland. I graduated from there with a
B.S. in Chemistry in Jan '67 and went to work at the Naval Research
Laboratory in Washington, D.C., in the Chemical Oceanography Branch of the
Ocean Sciences Division. I participated in numerous expeditions aboard U.
S. Navy and University Research Ships. Through a Fellowship from the
Laboratory I went back to school at U. Md. and got a Ph.D. in chemistry in
1985. At that time I joined the Surface Chemistry Branch of Chemistry
Divsion to work on thin films used to make microsensors. I retired from the
Naval Research Lab in 1998, and I now live in an old waterfront cottage on a
small island in the Potomac River about 60 miles south of D.C.
